Every five years, a different animal of the popular "Big Five" is introduced in the new bullion series, starting with the Elephant in 2022. The new motive elephant is thus issued within the next five years with the same motive and changing year number. Followed by the lion, the rhino, the leopard and lastly the buffalo, also in a 5-year rhythm.

The motive of the 1 oz gold coin shows a detailed close-up of the head of an adult elephant. The inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2022" and the South African coat of arms are also part of the design. The reverse shows two halves of an elephant's head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a full close-up portrait of an elephant. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, an entire herd of elephants appears. In the center, the denomination "FIFTY RAND", the weight "1OZ" and the fineness "Au 999.9" are shown.
