The gilded silver coin celebrates the Australian Honey bee (Apis mellifera), which has populated the country for 200 years now. Struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality, the partially gold-plated design features a honeycomb, flowers and five bees. Inside the honeycomb is the inscription "HONEY BEE". The reverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "NIUE 2022," "ONE DOLLAR" and "1OZ 999 SILVER."

Before the honey bee was introduced from Europe in 1822, there were no native honey bees in Australia for commercial use. Since its introduction, the honey bee has played a central role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem health in Australia and around the world. Some 2,000 species of bees are now native to the red continent and have pollinated a large proportion of crops there, supporting Australia's horticultural and agricultural industries and creating jobs. Currently, Australia's honey and beeswax industry is worth about $90 million annually. The mintage of the partially gilded silver coin commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Australian honey bee is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide.
