The Gold coin in proof quality was struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold and is dedicated to the Platypus. The partially in color minted motive features a platypus diving into the water. Above the water surface, another platypus is depicted. Also included in the design is the inscription "AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS". The reverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the denomination, weight, fineness, and year of issue.
The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of Australia's most unique animals and was discovered by European scientists in 1798. Its name is derived from the Greek word "platys" meaning flat and "pous" meaning foot. It has a duck-like bill, a flat tail, otter feet, and a brown, water-repellent coat. Not only its unusual appearance, but also its ability to glow bluish-green under fluorescent light, makes it one of the most spectacular mammals on the Australian continent. Its other unusual talents include the ability to produce venom on its hind legs and to detect its prey underwater by electrical signals. The limited 1 Oz Platypus gold proof coin is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
