The second issue in the Perth Mint's Goddesses of Olympus series is dedicated to Athena. The motive depicts the goddess of wisdom, strategy and battle with a helmet, spear and shield. The patron goddess of the city of Athens is also depicted with an owl, a typical symbol of Athena, and a snake. The inscription "ATHENA" and the Perth Mint's "P" mintmark are also included in the design. The reverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the denomination, weight, fineness and year of issue.
Athena is considered one of the most beautiful goddesses of Olympus, but is perceived as less vain than Aphrodite and Hera. She is typically presented with a shield showing the head of Medusa and often wears a fur, a gift from her father Zeus, over her shoulder. Although she is worshipped as the goddess of battle and strategy, she kept her distance from brutal conflict and instead focused on intelligence and mediation. The limited 2 Oz Antique Finish silver coin is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
