The five coins included in the set were each struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality and show the portraits of those animals known worldwide as the "Big Five": An elephant, a lion, a rhino, a leopard and a buffalo. The inscription "South Africa" and the South African coat of arms are also part of the design. The reverse features two halves of each animal, creating a full close-up portrait when two coins are placed side by side.
