200th Anniversary First Antarctic Expedition
2 Euro - Uncirculated
- Mintage 750,000 pieces
This 2 Euro coin in uncirculated quality is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the first Antarctic expedition. January 28, 1820 is considered the day on which Antarctica was discovered by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen after months of travel. The navigator and admiral had set out on the long journey to the South Pole together with the supply ship Mirny after having been commissioned by Tsar Alexander I and had finally sighted the edge of the "ice continent". The discovery of Antarctica was followed by a circumnavigation of the South Pole and the arrival at home in 1821. The motive of the coin shows the corvette "Vostok" and the inscriptions "Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen", "Antarktika 200" and "EESTI 2020". The commemorative coin is delivered loose.
