This 5 Euro silver coin from Malta is dedicated to the Knights of Malta and is the second issue from the new series honoring the traditions of the Order of Malta. Minted from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver, the motive of the coin features a Maltese knight in direct confrontation with an invader during the Great Siege of Malta. The Siege of Malta at the hands of an Ottoman army is one of the most important battles in the island's history and began with the first sighting of the Turkish fleet off the island's coast on May 18th, 1565. The detailed design is surrounded by the inscription "KNIGHTS OF THE PAST" and the denomination "5 EURO". The reverse of the silver coin shows a Maltese knight presenting the order's coat of arms on a shield. The design is surrounded by the year of issue, the issuing country, and the weight and fineness specifications.

The founding of the Order of Malta goes back to the establishment of a hospital in Jerusalem in the 11th century, as well as the First Crusades (1096-1099). Through their work, the Knights of Malta, quickly gained recognition, which led Pope Paschalis II to recognize the monastic community as a religious order of novices in 1113. Limited to only 15,000 pieces worldwide, the silver coin in uncirculated quality is delivered in an illustrated blistercard including a certificate of authenticity.
