The Royal Australian Mint's “Australia Zoo” Series immortalizes the inhabitants of the Australia Zoo on premium bullion coins in gold and silver. The series comprises a total of five issues with the following motives: Sumatran Tiger 2020, Cheetah 2021, Elephant 2022, Rhinoceros 2023 and the last issue in the series Giraffe in 2024. The premium silver bullion coins were all issued with a limited mintage of 25,000 pieces. The premium gold bullion coins were issued in a small mintage of just 250 coins each.

Australia Zoo is located in the state of Queensland and is home to more than 1000 animals. The zoo was founded on June 3, 1970 by Bob and Lyn Irwin, at that time still under the name “Beerwah Reptile & Fauna Park”. After they retired, their son Steve Irwin - better known as the Crocodile Hunter - and his wife Terri took over the park and renamed it “Australia Zoo”. After Steve Irwin died from a stingray bite on September 4, 2006, his widow Terri Irwin took over the management of the zoo.
