The first issue of the Australian Shipwreck series is dedicated to one of Australian's most infamous shipwreck, the Batavia. This world's first triangular-shaped bullion coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from 1 ounce of 99,99% pure gold. With the image of the ship viewed upright, the Batavia is shown setting sail in its full glory. Flipping the coin to view the text of ‘1629’ and ‘Batavia’ upright, depicts the ship in its final state capsized shortly after wrecking in 1629. The desing also shows unique elements from the Batavia. The obverse design depicts the fighting between the survivors as a result of the mutiny before the final demise of the Batavia. The Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination are also part of the coin design. The strictly limited gold coin is delivered in a triangular capsule with a numbered certificate of the Royal Australian Mint.
