The motive features the infamous Red-back Spider in color. The inscription "Red-Back Spider" is also included in the design. The reverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. as well as the year of issue, the denomination, the weight and the fineness. The mintage of this impressive 5 Oz gold proof coin is strictly limited to only 50 pieces worldwide. Each coin features an individually numbered edge. The Red-Back Spider is one of the few Australian spider species whose bite can be life-threatening to humans. The female specimens can reach a length of 10 to 12 mm, whereas the males are clearly smaller with a length of 3 to 4 mm. Its most striking feature is the orange to red colored stripe on its back.
