The new Royal Australian Mint series "Mini Money" is dedicated to the native animals of Australia. The first issue features the most famous marsupial in the world - the koala. Along with the kangaroo, the koala is the most familiar representative of the Australian fauna and one of the most popular symbols of Australia. Due to disease and loss of habitat, the population of koalas has sunken significantly and led to them being classified as an endangered species. The motive of the coin depicts a smiling koala sitting on a branch among eucalyptus leaves. The reverse of the coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination "2 DOLLARS" as well as the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA 2021". At first glance, koalas seem to be solitary animals. Only on closer observation is it possible to see that they live in a stable social system. The cute marsupials can be found in the coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia. There, each animal has its own territory with a fix feeding and sleeping tree. Koalas eat only the nutrient-poor leaves of the eucalyptus tree. They are still very fussy. Of the approximately 600 eucalyptus species in Australia, they accept only a very small number as food. The limited gold coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from half a gram of 99.99% pure gold and is delivered in a presentation capsule including a certificate of authenticity.
