The second issue of the new series Icons of Inspiration is dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. The motive was designed by coin designer Joel Iskowitz and features an image of the famous artist and scientist while holding a brush in his hand. In the background are several famous paintings and inventions of da Vinci depicted. Below his portrait is the signature of the famous scientist. The reverse displays a triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination and year of issue. Born in Italy on April 15th in 1452, Leonardo da Vinci was not only a renowned painter and artist behind the world-famous paintings of the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and Vitruvian Man, but also a respected Renaissance scientist and theorist. Da Vinci's works across all facets of art and science are some of humankind's most studied and cherished. To this day, historians attempt to explore the hidden symbolism of his creations.
