The second issue of the new Series Pirate Queens is dedicated to the Chinese pirate Ching Shih - one of the most notorious and deadly pirates of her time. The motive of the Premium Bullion Coin from the Royal Australian Mint features the pirate ship of Ching Shih with hoisted flag and smoking gun barrels. A large Chinese dragon is depicted in the sea below the ship. The inscription "CHING SHIH" and the weight and fineness complete the design. The reverse shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination and the year of issue. Ching Shih was born Shih Yang in 1775 in a poverty-ridden society in Guangdong Province, China. To supplement her family's income, she worked as a prostitute from an early age before marrying the pirate Zheng Yi and building a strong fleet of some 1,200 ships to sail the world's oceans. A considerable 80,000 men were under her command - the famous pirate Blackbeard, on the other hand, commanded only a few thousand men and about 300 ships. The Pirate Queens - Ching Shih Premium Bullion Coin in Gold is strictly limited to only 100 pieces worldwide and is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Royal Australian Mint.
