The gold coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from a 1/10 ounce of gold in proof quality and is dedicated to the Australovenator. The motive features an Australovenator chasing smaller dinosaurs as well as a reconstruction of the skeleton on whose discovery the description of the Australovenator was based. The inscriptions "AUSTRALOVENATOR", "DINOSAURS DOWNUNDER" and the denomination "10 DOLLARS" complete the design. The reverse shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue. The megaraptor theropod dinosaur, whose name refers both to its location in the southern hemisphere (Latin Austral, australis - "southern") and to its predatory lifestyle (Latin venator - "hunter"), lived about 100 million years ago in the Early Cretaceous and is the largest predator whose remains have been discovered in Australia to date.
