The strictly limited gold coin is the first 5 Oz Koala gold coin and features the 2014 Australian Koala Design. The coin was struck by the Perth Mint from 5 ounces of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality. With a mintage of only 99 pieces worldwide, the coin is only available in very limited quantities. Along with the kangaroo, the koala is the most familiar representative of the Australian fauna and one of the most popular symbols of Australia. The motive of the 2014 issue features a detailed depiction of a koala with eucalyptus leaves, the inscription "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" as well as details of weight, fineness and year of issue. The reverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination "500 DOLLARS" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA". On the first view koalas seem to be loners. Only on closer observation is it possible to see that they live in a stable social system. Each animal has its own territory. In it there are solid food and sleeping trees. Koalas eat only the nutrient-poor leaves of the eucalyptus tree. They are still very fussy. Of the approximately 600 eucalyptus species in Australia, they accept only a very small number as food. The rare 5 Oz Koala Gold Coin is delivered in the original wooden box including a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Perth Mint.
