The 2025 issue of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle was struck by The Perth Mint from 1 kilo of 99.99% pure gold in Proof quality and additionally enhanced with an elegant 22-carat rose gold plating. The Ultra High Relief gold coin depicts a majestic wedge-tailed eagle, Australia’s largest bird of prey, standing on the ground with its wings outstretched. The sculpted design is struck on a concave coin surface, allowing the metal to flow optimally during the minting process and bringing the extraordinary depth of the Ultra High Relief design to particularly impressive effect.

The detailed design was created by renowned American sculptor and engraver John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. For The Perth Mint, this motive represents Mercanti’s 10th official Wedge-Tailed Eagle design. The design is surrounded by the inscription "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE". Also included in the design are the traditional "P" mintmark of The Perth Mint, the year of issue 2025, as well as the coin’s weight and fineness. In addition to the eagle motive, the outer rim of the coin has also been plated in rose gold, giving this exclusive 1-kilo issue an extraordinary appearance. The reverse features the portrait of King Charles III, the country of issue and the denomination.

The wedge-tailed eagle is easily recognized by its wedge-shaped tail and its legs feathered all the way down to the feet. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres, this imposing bird of prey can glide for hours at altitudes of 2,000 metres and beyond on thermal air currents above Australia’s sun-drenched landscape. It is mainly native to mainland Australia and Tasmania.
