The 2018 edition of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle was struck by the Perth Mint from 5 ounces of 99.99% pure gold. It is the third design by the famous engraver John M. Mercanti. The motive depicts an adult Wedge-Tailed Eagle with its offspring in a nest. In the background, another wedge-tailed eagle can be seen flying towards the nest with its wings spread. The motive is framed by the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE" and "2018 5oz 9999 GOLD". The traditional Mintmark "P" of the Perth Mint is also included in the design. The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the denomination.

The Wedge-tailed eagle is one of the biggest eagles in the world. Its impressive wings have a wingspan of up to 2.7 meters.
