The 2022 edition of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle was struck by the Perth Mint from 5 ounces of 99.99% pure gold. It is the seventh design by the famous engraver John M. Mercanti. The motive depicts a close-up of the head of a Wedge-Tailed Eagle - Australia's largest bird of prey. The detailed design highlights the eagle's plumage, eyes and large, hooked beak. The motive is framed by the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE" and "2022 5oz 9999 GOLD". The traditional Mintmark "P" of the Perth Mint is also included in the design. The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the denomination.

The Wedge-tailed eagle is one of the biggest eagles in the world. Its impressive wings have a wingspan of up to 2.7 meters.
