The 2023 edition of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle was struck by the Perth Mint from 5 ounces of 99.99% pure gold. It is the seventh design by the famous engraver John M. Mercanti. The motive of the high relief proof coin depicts a Wedge-Tailed Eagle - Australia's largest bird of prey - perched on a branch with wings outstretched. The motive is framed by the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE" and "2023 5oz 9999 GOLD". The traditional Mintmark "P" of the Perth Mint is also included in the design. Both the Wedge-Tailed Eagle and the edge of the coin were platinum plated and provide a contrasting effect. The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the dates of her reign and the denomination.

The Wedge-tailed eagle is one of the biggest eagles in the world. Its impressive wings have a wingspan of up to 2.7 meters.
