The Perth Mint has issued the Pillar Dollar 2025 gold coin in proof quality to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Australian Proclamation Coins. To honor the occasion, the motive of the coin struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold features the inscription “VTRAQUE VNUM” (both are one) with the Spanish crown and two hemispheres below, symbolizing the old and new world. The two worlds are framed on the left and right by depictions of the Pillars of Hercules, on whose English name “Pillars of Hercules” the name “Pillar Dollar” is based. Both pillars are surrounded by spiral banners with the inscription “PLVS VLTRA”. The s-shaped arrangement of the banners around the pillars presumably refers to the origin of the dollar sign “$”. Also included in the design is the year of issue “2025”. The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III as well as details of the weight, fineness, denomination and issuing country.
The Australian proclamation coins are associated with Governor King's edict of 1800 to resolve a currency crisis in the colony of New South Wales and are central to Australia's early monetary history. To address the ongoing shortage at the time, Governor Macquarie brought 40,000 Spanish reales to the colony and modified them into “holey dollars” (outer rings) and “dumps” (center) using an innovative stamping process, which led to the first currency minted in Australia. Limited to 200 pieces worldwide, the Pillar Dollar gold proof coin commemorating the 225th anniversary of the Proclamation Coins is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Perth Mint.
