This beautiful two ounces gold proof coin with high relief commemorates the centenary of the Armistice in 1918. Signed between France, Britain and Germany in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne north of Paris, the Armistice implemented a ceasefire at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The Treaty of Versailles, which formally ended the war, was then signed on 28 June 1919. Struck by The Perth Mint from 99.99% pure gold, the $ 200 coin features a dove, a bird which has for millennia represented peace, holding in its beak a red poppy. Poppies were the first flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of Western Europe and soon became widely accepted as the symbol of remembrance. In the background is the word peace struck in different fonts, the inscription '1918 END of WORLD WAR I' and The Perth Mint’s traditional 'P' mintmark. The obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2018 year-date, the weight '2oz', the fineness '9999 GOLD', the monetary denomination '200 DOLLARS', the inscription 'ELIZABETH II' and 'AUSTRALIA'. The gold coin’s high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die. The gold coin is housed in a display case within a themed shipper and accompanied by a numbered certificate.
