The gold coin is dedicated to the Year of the Goat 2027 and therefore to the eighth animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar. According to an ancient Chinese legend, the Emperor ordered a great race between all the animals on Earth to determine the twelve places in the lunar calendar. On the way to the finish line, the gentle and determined Goat joined forces with the Monkey and the Rooster. Together, the three crossed a wide river. The Goat led the group to the opposite bank and eventually reached the finish line in eighth place. This is why the Goat occupies the eighth position in the Chinese zodiac.

The eighth release of the 12-year Lunar III Series features a highly detailed depiction of a goat in a rocky mountain landscape. The animal stands on rocky ground, while a rugged landscape and a tree can be seen in the background. The intricate design also incorporates the Chinese character for “Goat”, the inscription “GOAT 2027” and The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mintmark. The reverse of the coin portrays the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, together with inscriptions of the weight, fineness and denomination.
