The 2022 Sovereign gold coin was struck by the Perth Mint from 91.70% pure gold in proof quality. The commemorative gold coin celebrates the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne while paying tribute to the historic 1855 Sydney Mint sovereign coin designed by Royal Mint Engraver Leonard Charles Wyon, which was the first coin to be produced at The Sydney Mint in 1855. Under the authority of Queen Victoria, a new reverse design was developed to differentiate the Sydney Mint sovereigns from the Imperial coins. The coin features the St. Edward's Crown, which has been platinum plated for this issue, a laurel wreath, the word ‘AUSTRALIA’, and historic elements of Royal Mint engraver Leonard Charles Wyon’s original Type I reverse. The design also includes the inscriptions ‘PERTH MINT’ and ‘SOVEREIGN’. In celebration of the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, the coin also bears a ‘70’ privy mark. The reverse depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the monetary denomination. This special Sovereign gold coin is delivered in the original box including a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
