She served as constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as the Commonwealth realms, Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the first ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. She passed away at the age of 96, surrounded by close family members at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Following her death, her son, King Charles III, ascended the throne.
