France has issued this 50 euro coin to commemorate the Coronation of Napoleon. The motive shows the coronation of Emperor Napoleon I, who put his crown on himself against existing tradition, and his first wife, Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. The coronation took place on December 2nd, 1804 in the presence of Pope Pius VII. This depiction of the symbolic coronation ceremony in Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral is a painting by artist Jacques-Louis David, on display in the Louvre. The reverse shows the Louvre pyramid and the museum building as well as the denomination "50 EURO".
