Since 2007, the Monnaie de Paris has issued coins in honor of sites and landmarks listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The 2021 issue is dedicated on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of the explorer Fernando de Magellan. The motive of the coin features the portrait of Fernando de Magellan (1480 - 1521) and his famous ship "Victoria". In the background a world map is indicated as well as the route of Magellan's expedition to the Molucca Islands. The parallels and meridians are also included in the design. The reverse shows the window of the nave of the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar in Portugal. It is meant to commemorate the ships of the time of great discoveries and decorated in the Manueline style. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular sights in the city. The year of the issue and the inscription "UNESCO" are also displayed. The Euro gold coin will be delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
