The Proof gold coin was struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold and is dedicated to the Black Swan (Cygnus atratus). The design has been partially colorized and depicts a Black Swan on the water, based on illustrations by the British ornithologist and animal artist John Gould. Further swans can be seen on the water in the background. Also included in the design are the inscription "BLACK SWAN" and the "JG" Privy Mark, created in honor of John Gould. The reverse features the effigy of King Charles III, together with the denomination of 100 dollars, the weight, fineness and year of issue.
Born on 14 September 1804 in Dorset, England, John Gould is regarded as one of the best-known ornithologists and animal artists of the 19th century. His travels and research resulted in several important works on the wildlife of Australia, including detailed and vividly colored depictions of the Black Swan. Gould published numerous scientific works on birds and played a major role in introducing the Australian bird world to a European audience. His illustrations are distinguished by their naturalistic style, exceptional attention to detail and vivid coloring. The Black Swan is native to Australia, where it is found mainly on lakes, rivers, lagoons and in other wetland habitats. Today, this elegant waterbird can also be found in other parts of the world, including Germany. Its plumage is almost entirely black. Other distinctive features include its white flight feathers, which are particularly visible in flight, as well as its red eyes and bright red bill. Black Swans feed mainly on aquatic plants, algae and grasses. They often live in larger groups and form stable pairs during the breeding season.
