This Lord of the Rings™ gold proof coin was issued by the New Zealand Mint to honor J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy. The motive features a close-up of the Hornburg, the largest and strongest fortress in the kingdom of Rohan. It is located in the fortified gorge of Helm's Deep in the west of Rohan. The copyright as well as the weight and fineness are also included in the design. The reverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions "NIUE", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue and the denomination.

The fortified gorge of Helm's Deep was built by the Dúnedain before it later fell to the Rohirrim. The ravine itself is located at the end of a large valley in the White Mountains, west of Edoras, the capital of Rohan. The fortress played a very important role in the battle for Middle Earth, where an alliance of the Riders of Rohan, the Elves of Lothlórien and the members of the scattered Fellowship of the Ring defeated the power of the Dark Wizard Saruman in a mighty battle against the Uruk-hai army. The Battle of Hornburg is thus one of the most important turning points in the battle for Middle Earth and the fate of the free people.
