This Lord of the Rings™ gold proof coin was issued by the New Zealand Mint to honor J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy. The motive features a close-up of Mount Doom, also known as Orodruin and Amon Amarth. It is an active volcano in the center of Mordor, the realm of the necromancer Sauron™. The copyright as well as the weight and fineness are also included in the design. The reverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions "NIUE", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue and the denomination.

Mount Doom is one of the most important historical sites of Middle Earth and is the key to defeating Sauron™.
