With the release of the Big Five II Series, the South African Mint continues the success story of a coveted classic. Once again, the Series includes a total of five coins, all dedicated to South Africa's impressive wildlife. The animals known as the "Big Five" - Elephant - Lion - Buffalo - Rhino - Leopard - are considered emblems and ambassadors of this culturally rich country and represent the African fauna. The 2021 issue is dedicated to the Elephant and published as a Double Capsule Set. This unique set contains twice the first release in the Big Five II Series - each minted from a 1/4 ounce of 99.99% pure gold for the first time. The motive features the impressive portrait of an elephant. The inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2021" and the South African coat of arms are also part of the design. The reverse depicts two halves of an elephant head. When two of those coins are placed next to each other, a complete close-up portrait of an elephant is visible. By placing many of these coins next to each other, a whole herd of elephants appears. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is probably the largest and most impressive representative of the African animal world and stands for power and strength. The "gentle giant" is characterized by its excellent memory and a very pronounced social behavior. In the wild, the elephant can live up to 60 years - but to this day the threat from poachers remains great.
