With the release of the Big Five II Series, the South African Mint continues the success story of a coveted classic. Once again, the Series includes a total of five coins, all dedicated to South Africa's impressive wildlife. The animals known as the "Big Five" - Elephant - Lion - Buffalo - Rhino - Leopard - are considered emblems and ambassadors of this culturally rich country and represent the African fauna.

The 2023 issue is dedicated to the Leopard and published as a Double Capsule Set. This unique set contains twice the fourth release in the Big Five II Series - each struck from a 1/4 ounce of 99.99% pure gold. The motive features the impressive portrait of a leopard. The inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2023" and the South African coat of arms are also part of the design. The reverse depicts two halves of a leopard's head. When two of those coins are placed next to each other, a complete close-up portrait of a leopard is visible. By placing many of these coins next to each other, a whole pack of leopards appears.

Together with lion, tiger and jaguar, the leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the most graceful and powerful big cats. As a true survival artist, the lithe hunter can be found in the primeval forests of the African and Asian continents as well as in mountains, savannahs and semi-deserts.
