Inspired by the "Cheetah" sculpture by renowned South African artist and sculptor Dylan Lewis, the South African Mint presents this special issue as the launch of the new "The African Range" series. At the same time, these are the first-ever High Relief issues struck by the South African Mint, giving the coins a special position within the mint’s program. The coin was struck from 1/4 ounce of 99.99% pure gold in Proof and High Relief and faithfully recreates the sculpture "Surveying Cheetah".

Within the series, the cheetah is depicted in various moments of its natural behavior. The concept of the series follows five phases of a cheetah hunt: Survey, Stalk, Chase, Catch and Repose. The first issue shows the Survey phase - the moment in which the cheetah attentively observes its surroundings before further focusing on its prey. On the motive, the animal is depicted in an elevated position on a tree trunk, with a tense body posture and its gaze directed forward. The outer area contains details of the denomination, weight and fineness, as well as the series title "THE AFRICAN RANGE". The coin design is based on the artistic model by renowned South African artist Dylan Lewis and transfers the dynamism and expressiveness of his sculpture into a richly detailed relief design. Thanks to the striking in impressive High Relief, the body shape, fur structure and tree trunk stand out with exceptional three-dimensionality. The reverse is also based on a sculpture by the artist Dylan Lewis. It was likewise struck in High Relief and shows a finely detailed bust of the cheetah as well as the year of issue. The relief execution on both sides enhances the sculptural character of the issue and emphasizes its close connection to the artistic model.

Dylan Lewis is considered one of South Africa’s most important contemporary sculptors. He gained international recognition above all for his monumental bronze sculptures of leopards, cheetahs and other big cats, which impressively capture power, movement and the untamed beauty of the wilderness. His works are characterized by extraordinary attention to detail, dynamic surface structures and a palpable tension between elegance and primal nature. Today, his bronzes are regarded as sought-after collector’s pieces and are represented in renowned private and public art collections worldwide.

The The African Range - Cheetah 1/4 oz High Relief Gold Coin is issued in a limited mintage of only 2,000 pieces worldwide. The coin is delivered in the original wooden box including a certificate of authenticity.
