Why Invest in Silver Bullion Coins

Silver is not only a precious metal but also a value-preserving raw material with growing industrial importance. At the same time, it serves as protection against inflation and is a meaningful addition to a diversified portfolio.

The key advantages:

  • Inflation protection: Silver acts as a counterbalance to paper currencies and retains its substance even in times of crisis.
  • Accessibility: Lower price compared to gold – ideal for beginners and long-term savers.
  • Physical security: No issuer risk, no digital dependency.
  • Global acceptance: Worldwide recognized coins like  Maple Leaf or Philharmonic can be traded at any time.
  • Value development: Growing industrial demand in areas such as solar energy or electronics supports the long-term outlook.

Silver as a Tangible Asset

Unlike certificates or ETCs, when you purchase silver coins, you acquire a real, physical investment asset. In times of inflation, currency fluctuations, or financial market turbulence, the intrinsic value of silver remains intact – an advantage that digital investment forms cannot offer.

For thousands of years, silver has served as currency, means of payment, and standard of value. Even today, it is regarded as a crisis-resistant precious metal. Bullion coins such as the Silver Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic continue this tradition, combining historical stability with modern investment opportunities.

What Are Silver Bullion Coins?

Tangible Assets

The term bullion refers to coins whose value is primarily derived from their precious metal content. In contrast to collector or proof issues, the focus is on material value and tradability.

Bullion coins are usually minted in brilliant uncirculated quality. This makes them durable, clearly defined, and suitable for circulation. They offer investors an easy way to acquire physical silver that can be valued and sold worldwide at any time.

Typical Features

  • Fine silver content usually 999/1000 or 999.9/1000
  • Standardized weights (typically: 1 oz, but also 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz)
  • Price is based on the current  silver spot rate
  • Recognized and tradable worldwide

The focus is on material value, not on collector features or limited editions.

Comparing Silver Bullion and Premium Brilliant Uncirculated Coins

Solid Investment Quality – Silver Bullion at a Glance

  • High mintages focused on pure material value
  • Price directly linked to the current silver rate
  • Small minting marks are common and do not affect trade value

Silver bullion coins stand for stability and are ideal for investors who prefer pure precious metal.

Refined Minting Quality – Premium Brilliant Uncirculated in Detail

  • Freshly polished dies for finer contours and an even shine
  • Usually lower mintages than classic bullion coins
  • Higher artistic standards and often part of themed or collector series
  • Combination of fine silver content and aesthetic value

FAQ

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What are silver bullion coins, and how do they differ from collector coins?

Silver bullion coins serve purely as investment assets. Their price is determined by the current silver spot price and fine weight. Collector coins or premium issues additionally have an artistic or limited character and often come with a higher premium.

Do I have to pay VAT when buying silver coins in Germany?

Yes. In Germany, silver coins are subject to a VAT rate of 19 %. Since January 1, 2025, newly imported silver coins may no longer be margin taxed but are instead subject to 19 % VAT on the total sales price. Margin taxation (§ 25a UStG) remains possible only for existing stock or secondary market goods. The reduced rate of 7 % does not apply to bullion coins, except in rare cases for true collector coins with a price significantly above their metal value. Silver thus fundamentally differs from investment gold, which is exempt from VAT.

How safe is it to store silver coins at home?

Home storage is safe if proper precautions are taken: a certified safe, airtight and dry packaging (silver can tarnish), and discreet storage. Alternatively, consider a bank safe deposit box or specialized precious metal storage facility.

Which silver coins are best suited for beginners?

Popular beginner coins include the Maple Leaf, Britannia, Vienna Philharmonic, and American Eagle. They are globally recognized, highly liquid, and feature low premiums – ideal for a transparent entry into silver investing.

How can I resell silver bullion coins?

Resale is straightforward through precious metal dealers, specialized shops such as ours, or on the private market. Important: condition and original packaging influence the buyback price. Standard coins usually achieve market-based prices.

Do I have to pay taxes when selling?

Profits from selling physical silver coins are considered private sales transactions (§ 23 EStG). After a holding period of at least 12 months, they are completely tax-free. If sold within 12 months, a tax-free allowance of €1,000 per year (since tax year 2024) applies. If this threshold is exceeded, the entire profit is subject to your personal income tax rate.
