Description
Schickard's Calculator - 400 Years
20 Euro - 18 Gram Silver - Uncirculated
- Commemorative Coin
- Coin of the German Mint Munich - Mintmark D
- Mintage not known yet
Germany dedicates this 20 Euro Silver coin to the 400th anniversary of the invention of the calculating machine by Wilhelm Schickard. The motive was designed by artist Florian Huhoff from Berlin and shows a schematic representation of the historical calculating machine. On the side, some functional relationships are shown as a diagram. The design is framed by the inscriptions "400 JAHRE RECHENMASCHINE", "Wilhelm Schickard" and "1623". The reverse shows the federal eagle, the inscription "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the denomination, the year of issue, the twelve stars of Europe and the mintmark "D" of the mint Munich. The edge of the coin contains the inscription "MACHINAM EXTRUXI QUAE DATOS NUMEROS COMPUTET". This is a phrase from a letter from Wilhelm Schickard to Johannes Kepler, in which Schickard tells of his invention. Translated, the inscription means "I have constructed a machine which computes given numbers".
The calculating machine invented by the Tübingen professor, mathematician and astronomer Wilhelm Schickard (1592-1635) was the first documented calculating machine in the world with a mechanical transmission of tens. The invention was driven by Schickard's desire to be able to perform error-free astronomical calculations. After its construction in 1623, the machine was lost in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, and it was not until the middle of the 20th century that it could be reconstructed with the help of sketches and descriptive texts. The 20 Euro commemorative coin "400th anniversary of the invention of Schickard's Calculator" in uncirculated quality is delivered loose.
