The new issue of the Australian Lunar Series III by the Perth Mint is dedicated to the Year of the Horse, the seventh animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar. According to an ancient Chinese legend, the emperor once ordered a great race among all animals on earth to determine the twelve places of the lunar calendar. Each animal had to cross a raging river. The horse would almost have taken sixth place, but just before the finish line, the snake jumped out of its hiding place, startled the horse, and thus reached the goal before it. Therefore, the horse takes the seventh rank in the zodiac.
The seventh issue of the 12-year Lunar III Series features a very detailed depiction of a mare together with her foal. Both are shown with elegantly flowing manes in a dynamic galloping pose. In the background rise imposing mountain ranges, forming a harmonious contrast to the tranquil vastness of lush grasslands. Integrated into the artistic design are the Chinese character for “Horse”, the inscription “HORSE 2026”, as well as the traditional mintmark “P” of the Perth Mint. The reverse of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne, complemented by details on weight, fineness, and denomination.
Horses have been loyal companions of humankind for thousands of years. They embody strength, elegance, and sensitivity, are regarded as symbols of freedom and grace, and continue to play an important role in sports, leisure, and culture. People born in the Year of the Horse are considered energetic, freedom-loving, and independent, yet also sociable, charming, and full of joie de vivre. The gilded Year of the Horse silver coin is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
