The Premium Bullion Coin was struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver and is dedicated to the American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber). The motive features an image of a single flamingo in the foreground and a group of other specimens in the background. Also included in the design are the inscription "AMERICAN FLAMINGO" as well as the denomination, weight and fineness. The reverse shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue. The American Flamingo is closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo and inhabits the northern coast of South America, the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and some of the Caribbean islands. A small, isolated population also lives in the Galapagos Islands. Like the Greater Flamingo, the American Flamingo has the longest legs of any bird in proportion to its body size. The plumage has the characteristic pink-red-orange coloring, however American Flamingos are the most brightly feathered of all flamingo species.
