The seventh issue of the series Icons of Inspiration is dedicated to Thomas Edison. The motive was designed by coin designer Joel Iskowitz and features an image of Thomas Edison with a phonograph. The invention of the apparatus, which can transform sound waves into mechanical traces and reproduce them, dates back to 1877 and made Edison world famous. The signature of the inventor is also included in the design. The reverse displays a triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination, year of issue, weight and fineness.
Inventor and businessman Thomas Alva Edison was born in Ohio on February 11, 1847, and died in New Jersey on October 18, 1931. The highly gifted son of a schoolteacher and a land speculator entered professional life at the age of 12 and discovered his strong business acumen, which enabled him to market his numerous inventions very successfully to financiers and the public throughout his life. Almost 1100 registered patents crown the career of Thomas Edison, whose most important inventions include the phonograph, the kinetoscope, the mimeograph and the electric vote counter for assemblies. The limited premium bullion coin in honor of Thomas Edison is delivered in a protective capsule.
