The ninth issue of the series Icons of Inspiration is a tribute to William Shakespeare. The motive was designed by coin designer Joel Iskowitz and features an image of the famous poet and playwright holding a quill pen in his hand. Also included in the design are the legendary writer's signature and a depiction of the Globe Theater, which was the setting for numerous performances of his plays. The earth is depicted in the background, while the inscription "ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS" is engraved along the edge of the coin. The reverse displays a triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination, year of issue, weight and fineness.
William Shakespeare is considered the greatest poet in the English language and was active in the late 16th and 17th centuries. His best-known works include "Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth", "Hamlet" and "Othello". Shakespeare's legacy remains today through the timelessness of his works, which continue to be performed and studied in schools and universities around the world.
