The fifth issue of the series Icons of Inspiration is dedicated to the Wright Brothers. The motive was designed by coin designer Joel Iskowitz and features an image of the two brothers in the foreground as well as the blueprints for their airplane in the background. Below the portraits, the signatures of Wilbur and Orville Wright were engraved. The reverse displays a triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination and year of issue.
The Wright Brothers are considered pioneers of U.S. aviation. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright completed the first flight with the motorized biplane one-man "Flyer I." on the beach of North Carolina over a distance of 37 meters and a duration of twelve seconds. This was followed by further and longer flights, which finally brought the Wright brothers, actually owners of a bicycle repair shop, the long-awaited success after years of tinkering. The brothers' airplane models were originally inspired by Otto Lilienthal's glider flights, but were augmented with aerodynamic rudders for control and an engine for propeller propulsion. The limited premium bullion coin in honor of the Wright Brothers is delivered in a protective capsule.
