The first release of the new Owls Series is dedicated to the Great Horned Owl. The one ounce silver coin depicts an ornamented Great Horned Owl with its long ear-like tufts, surrounded by decorations at the edge. The inscriptions "OWLS" and "GREAT HORNED OWL" are also included in the design. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with the tuluma, the national symbol of Tokelau. The tuluma is a wooden fishing box used by the fisherman of Tokelau. The Virginia Eagle Owl is widespread in North America and can be found in deserts, wetlands, forests, grasslands and cities. Their soft feathers protect them from the cold weather and help them fly quietly to hunt for their prey. The male owl can reach a wingspan of 90 to 150 cm and is the largest owl on the North American continent. It can be easily recognized by the reddish brown to gray color of its plumage as well as its ears, which strongly resemble horns due to the upright feathers.
