The fifth issue of the Silver Eagle series "American Wildlife" is dedicated to the Wolf (Canis lupus). The colored motive features a frontal shot of a wolf jumping. The year of issue 2022 and a detail of the American flag can be seen on the lower edge of the coin. On the right site of the wolf is the inscription "The Wolf". The reverse depicts the American bald eagle, the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" and the weight and fineness "1 OZ. FINE SILVER".

The Wolf is the largest predator from the dog family. Its range once extended from Europe through Asia and the Arabian Peninsula to North America. Since the 15th century, the wolf has been systematically hunted, resulting in a drastic reduction of wolf populations. In large parts of the USA and some parts of Western and Central Europe, it was even considered completely extinct. With the help of strict protection measures, the population was able to recover and is currently estimated at about 170,000 specimens worldwide. The different subspecies of wolves vary in color and size. What they all have in common is that they live and hunt in packs. Their main prey consists mostly of medium-sized ungulates - their populations are controlled by the wolves, which thus play a central role within an ecosystem.
