The American Silver Eagle coin was struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver and bears the title “Habemus Papam - Leo XIV”. It issue honors the 267th Bishop of the Diocese of Rome and the new head of the Roman Catholic Church. Robert Francis Prevost is the first American to hold this office and took the papal name Leo XIV following his election on May 8, 2025. The motive in color shows a depiction of the newly elected pontiff as well as the inscriptions “HABEMUS PAPAM”, “LEO XIV”, “May 8th, 2025”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2025”. The reverse features the American bald eagle with an oak branch in its talons. The eagle design is framed by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR - 1OZ. FINE SILVER”. “Habemus Papam” is a ceremonial formula in the Catholic Church and is used to mark the moment when the sedis vacante, the period without a pope, is officially ended by the successful election of a new pope.
