The sixth release in the Dolphin bullion coin series from the Royal Australian Mint is dedicated to the Hourglass Dolphin. The motive features two hourglass dolphins jumping in and out of the water, stirring up the sea with their tail fins. The horizon and the setting sun can be seen in the background. The design also includes the inscriptions "HOURGLASS DOLPHIN" and "1 oz .999 FINE SILVER". The reverse presents the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III as well as the state of issue "AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue "2024". The mintage is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide.

Hourglass dolphins (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) are one of the least researched dolphin species. They prefer cool habitats and are native to Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. Apart from the southern right whale dolphin, hourglass dolphins are the only dolphins that live so far south. The name of these dolphins from the genus of short-beaked common dolphins is based on their characteristic black and white body markings, which are reminiscent of an hourglass.
