This special Perth Mint issue features the Australian Koala design by award-winning artist Beth Zaiken. The Minnesota-based illustrator has many years of experience in designing large-scale reconstructions of modern and prehistoric animals in traditional and digital media. For her design of the 2021 American Liberty High Relief $100 gold coin, she won the prize for the best gold coin design at the Coin of the Year (COTY) Award Ceremony in 2022. Struck and incused from ten ounces of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, the motive of the Ultra High Relief silver coin shows a koala sitting in a tree and eating eucalyptus leaves. The design is completed by the year of issue “2025” and the Perth Mint's mintmark “P”. The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III as well as the weight, fineness and denomination.

Together with the kangaroo, the koala is one of the most striking representatives of the Australian fauna. It was first described by the zoologist Georg August Goldfuß in 1817 as “Lipurus cinereu.” Koalas prefer to live in dry eucalyptus forests, which provide a suitable food supply for the picky marsupials. Although koalas are often regarded as solitary animals, closer observation reveals that they live within a stable social system. Continually threatened by habitat loss, koalas are considered endangered by the IUCN.
