The 5 Oz High Relief coin by the Perth Mint features the new 2023 Australian Koala Design and was gilded in 22-carat pink gold. The motive features features a koala on a gum tree branch with a joey clinging to its back. Also included in the design are the inscriptions "KOALA" and "2023 5 oz 9999 SILVER". The reverse depicts the memorial portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the dates of her reign and the denomination.

Along with the kangaroo, the koala is the most familiar representative of the Australian fauna and one of the most popular symbols of Australia. On the first view, koalas seem to be loners. Only on closer observation is it possible to see that they live in a stable social system. Each animal has its own territory. In it there are solid food and sleeping trees. Koalas eat only the nutrient-poor leaves of the eucalyptus tree. They are still very fussy. Of the approximately 600 eucalyptus species in Australia, they accept only a very small number as food.
