The first issue of the Australian Opal Series is dedicated to the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). The coin was struck by the Perth Mint from 1 ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality. At the center is the koala design, crafted from genuine Australian opal. The opal design is framed by elements from the marsupial’s natural habitat. The inscription "KOALA", the traditional "P" mintmark of the Perth Mint, as well as details of weight, fineness, and year of issue are also included in the design. The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II along with the denomination.

The koala is a marsupial native to Australia that primarily lives in eucalyptus forests. It is known for its dense, gray fur, large ears, and arboreal lifestyle. Koalas feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, which provide little energy, so they spend a large portion of the day resting. Limited to 8,000 pieces worldwide, the koala silver coin with genuine Australian opal is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity from the Perth Mint.
