The motive features a depiction of the black swan against a colorful patterned background. The original painting is by Kevin Bynder of the Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong people. The works of the Australian artist and teacher are inspired by the nature of Western Australia and reflect the history and knowledge of his people. The black swan (Cygnus artratus), common in most parts of Australia, holds special spiritual significance in the ancestral stories of many indigenous Australians. The myth about "Maali" is about a majestic water bird with white plumage, which attracted attention by its very vain and boastful behavior. This behavior was punished by the eagle Waalti, who tore out Maali's precious feathers. The ravens, who pitied Maali, then dressed him up with black feathers from their own plumage.
