This silver proof coin was struck by the renowned Perth Mint from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver and features selected design elements refined with 24-carat gold. The issue commemorates the 175th anniversary of Australia’s first gold rush, which began in 1851 following the discovery of gold in Ophir, New South Wales, by Edward Hargraves. This historic event triggered significant migration, accelerated infrastructure development, and played a key role in shaping Australia’s economic and social landscape. The motive features a map of Australia at its center with a marked point at Ophir, alongside the number “175” representing the anniversary. Behind the map, a crossed shovel and pickaxe are depicted as iconic symbols of the gold rush. Additional symbols of traditional gold prospecting are included, such as a lantern, a tent, a wheelbarrow filled with alluvial material, a gold pan, a bucket, and a cradle set within rugged terrain. The outer rim, the map, as well as the shovel and pickaxe are gilded in gold. The design is completed by the inscription “AUSTRALIA’S FIRST GOLD RUSH”, the year of issue 2026, and the Perth Mint’s mintmark “P”. The reverse depicts the portrait of King Charles III, along with the inscriptions “AUSTRALIA”, the weight, the fineness, and the denomination.
