The Perth Mint's 2 Oz Antique Finish coin is dedicated to the total solar eclipse that will occur on April 20, 2023, over the city of Exmouth and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of Australia. Such a solar eclipse, which can occur exclusively during the new moon phase, is an astronomical event in which the moon moves between the earth and the sun and the three celestial bodies form a straight imaginary line. As a result, the light of the Sun no longer strikes the Earth directly - thus the area that is in the umbra of the Moon is obscured and shrouded in a mystical twilight.
The motive impressively depicts the phenomenon of the total solar eclipse, showing colorful corals of the Ningaloo Reef and a whale shark, the largest fish in the world, below the darkened sky of the Ningaloo solar eclipse. The edge of the coin again refers to the special and rare event and bears the inscription "NINGALOO ECLIPSE - 20 APRIL 2023 - 11:27 AM". The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the dates of her reign as well as the weight and fineness of the coin, denomination and year of issue. Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide, the Ningaloo Eclipse - 2 Oz Silver coin in Antique Finish is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Perth Mint.
