Description
Australian Shipwreck Series (4.) - Zeewijk
1 Oz Silver - Antique Finish
- Triangular-shaped bullion coin in Antique Finish
- 4th and final Issue of the Australian Shipwreck Series
- Limited Mintage only 1,000 pieces
- Delivery in triangular-shaped Capsule
The fourth and final issue of the Australian Shipwreck Series is dedicated to the Zeewijk. The triangular-shaped bullion coin in Antique Finish was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from 1 ounce of 99.9% silver. The motive depicts the Zeewijk in full glory. It is framed by decorative maritime ornaments. Turning the coin over, the weight and fineness as well as the year "1727" and the inscription "Zeewijk" are visible upright. Additionally, the ship is shown in the state after its sinking in 1727. The reverse shows scenes from the dramatic history of the Zeewijk, which set sail on November 7, 1726, and capsized on June 9, 1727, on its way to Batavia (Jakarta). Some of the crew managed to escape to nearby Gun Island. In 1629, the sinking of the Batavia had occurred just a few miles away. Both ship dramas were marked by murder, violence and madness among the survivors. Using the wreckage of the Zeewijk and other material they found on the surrounding islands, the survivors built a boat called the Sloepie - with which 82 people finally reached the original destination port of Batavia on April 30, 1728. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the denomination are also included in the design. The mintage is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide. The Antique Finish silver bullion coin is delivered in a triangular coin capsule from the Royal Australian Mint.
